Robert Your Questions About Omaha Poker Games

Robert asks…

Omaha Poker (Hi or Hi/Lo) as a living? i.e. Profitable?

First of all, I would say that I am a winning player at low-limit “brick and mortar” Hold’em games (NL or Limit), so I know that it is possible to make a living off poker. I know a few people who actually play for a living, grinding it out in both NL and Limit Hold’em. I am curious, is there any serious Omaha Hi or Hi/Lo players out there who are making a living or a good profit playing this game? Whether the format be Limit or PL. I’m trying to figure out whether Hold’em is the only poker game out there that is possible to make a living or a good profit off it. I understand it is really hard to find a good Omaha game because it is not as popular. But I do know some places that have Omaha games and I’m trying to see if it’s worth my time. Thanks!

poker holdem answers:

Yes, if you’re a good player you can make money playing Omaha. Here are a few things to keep in mind though:
Omaha isn’t played in as many places. If you do a little research online you can find cities where it is generally a little more popular, like New Orleans.
Omaha (Hi) is very expensive to play. Every time I’ve played in live games I see pots capped preflop and virtually every other street after, all the time. You’d better be ready to pay a LOT to see flops, be prepared to have a big roll to play through some wild hands, and play only VERY strong hands. It’s not a game for the weak.
Obviously you won’t make money as fast playing O8, since pots are split. The advantage to O8 is that so few people know how to play it correctly and you can clean up on them. It’s also very popular among retirees because they can play it for a long time without losing a lot (they think…) They play like stone cold rocks and will fold to almost any action, especially if there’s no lo coming, so you can steal a lot of pots off of them.
So do a little homework to find places where Omaha is popular, or move to Vegas where you can always find some kind of Omaha action.

Two of the places that offer high low split are the Orleans casino, and boulder station also spreads that game with a half-kill. Also the mirage also offers high low split as well.

Nancy Your Questions About Omaha Poker Games

Nancy asks…

poker game is omaha hi lo flop is 8,7,6 one player has A,4 the other player has 2,3 which hand is lower?

anon cropped Your Questions About Omaha Poker Games

poker holdem answers:

First off, you have 4 hole cards in Omaha, but I’ll assume you’re showing the lowest 2 – iirc, the ace can be either high or low, but doesn’t matter since both of the 2nd player’s cards are under the first’s 4, so at the moment player 2 has the best low hand.

Recommendations on poker books: Omaha and/or Stud?

I’ve been mainly playing hold’em for a while and dabbled in some games of omaha and stud. Books that cover the basics of poker not necessary. I’d like further understanding of Omaha and Stud.

These are very good books you can’t go wrong with.
1)For Omaha starters try Bob Ciaffone new edition of OMAHA POKER-this has all the variations in it high-hi/lo-limit-pot limit and tournament play. Omaha is one game that is very popular in pot limit.
2)7 Card Stud for Advanced Players by Sklansky-Malmuth and Zee. Just looks at the authors-a heavy weight line up. This is a very thick book
3)High-Low-Split Poker for Advanced Players-by Zee
this is 2 books in 1, 7 Card Stud and Omaha Eight-or-Better

I can go on and on and write 2 pages of book recommendations but if you start with these 3 and master them you will for sure be one great 7 card stud and omaha player.
